Namely, you\u2019ll have to figure out if you\u2019ll need to use an undercoat on the surface that you\u2019re going to paint over, and if you need a primer or a sealer paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those three paints will define how the painted surface will look once the paint dries. So, what is the difference between a primer, a sealer and an undercoat paint? We\u2019ve broken things up for you to understand, even if you aren\u2019t an experienced painter.<a name=\"what_is_primer_paint\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what_is_primer_paint\">What is <em>primer paint<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Primer paint is applied directly to the surface that you\u2019re going to paint over. The main function of the coat of primer paint is to give the top layer good adhesion to the substrate. Other functions of primer paint include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protecting the painted surface from moisture;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing the paint from sinking into the substrate;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prevent steel from rusting, if you\u2019re applying the primer on a steel surface;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect nail heads from rusting, as quality wood primer paints contain anti-corrosive ingredients and even prevent mould from growing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to prepare a surface for primer paint?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for the primer to work best, the surface should be properly prepared before priming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wash the substrate surface.<\/strong> Ideally, to be done 24 hours before applying the first coat of primer paint, use a damp cloth to wash the walls and remove any accumulated dust on the walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fill any holes and cracks with spackle.<\/strong> Make sure to fill any cracks and holes in the surface with spackle. Do this a couple of hours before applying the initial coat of primer paint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sand any glossy surfaces.<\/strong> Glossy paints and surfaces are harder to paint over. Sand them in order to roughen the surface and create a better bonding substrate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dust the substrate with a dry cloth.<\/strong> When you\u2019re sanding the glossy surface and the excess spackle you\u2019ll create a lot of dust. The main purpose of sealer paint is to provide good adhesion between the substrate and the new paint or the primer.<a name=\"what_is_undercoat_paint\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest pluses of sealers is that they can recondition old surface unfit for painting.
