Installing pavers in your backyard, driveway or around your pool is an amazing way to add character and value to your property. As time passes, however, pavers tend to sink, resulting in less eye-pleasing look.
So, let’s take the step-by-step process of fixing and levelling sunken pavers, as in most cases, it’s an easy task you can take care of in less than a weekend.
So you’re determined to fix the awful looking caved-in pavers, but before you jump right into the action, there are certain preparations. Take your time and gather the right tools to pry them up, prepare the base, and place them back in. Because it’s a fairly simple job, all you’ll need are two flathead screwdrivers, a rubber mallet, screeding (the one used to level concrete) and sand.
Grab your flathead screwdriver and wedge the tip between the pavers. Little by little pry them up while making sure to be gentle so you won’t damage them.
If you’re struggling to lift the paver, grab the rubber mallet and tap the surrounding ones to loosen them up a bit. Be careful as not to crack them.
Once you’ve removed the pavers from the affected place, it’s time to clean them up a bit. Removing anything that’s stuck on the sides will result in a better and tighter fit once you place them back.
A stiff-bristled brush would be more than enough to clean up the sides.
Grab a screeding board that’s the same height as the pavers and level the ground beneath them. Remember that it’s normal to still have uneven parts even after levelling. What’s more important is to remove all the bumps.
You’re going to use sand to level out the ground further. With the help of the screeding board, level out the ground.
To ensure the same height of the pavers once you lay them down, use the screeding board to make sure they’re the same height.
With the sand levelled, put the pavers in place. To set them better, lightly tap them with the rubber mallet.
Sinkage is a completely normal and natural process. As the earth moves, underground waters flow – so it’s just a shift in the soil beneath your property.
