Dirty footprints from dirty shoes on a carpet.

We’ve all seen it in movies, TV shows and even some of our friends – they’re wearing shoes inside their home. While you may have friends that do it, or you walk inside your home with your shoes on, this might be ruining your health.

Australia is one of those countries where it’s not a mass practice to wear shoes inside, but some people still do it.

The truth is, you’re contaminating your home, bringing in toxins from the outside and potentially harming yourself and your family.

Do Australians Wear Shoes Inside Their Home?

Yes and no. While many Aussies don’t wear their outside shoes inside their home some do. It depends where you’re from, and of course, most people pick up the habit from their family.

The problem is that by wearing your outdoor shoes inside your home you introduce numerous diseases, dust and toxins.

The Hidden Dangers of Wearing Shoes in Your Home

No matter how clean the city you live in is, you’d be surprised by the number of bacteria the soles of your shoes have.

According to a 2008 research conducted by Dr Gerba and the University of Arizona, discovered that the average shoes can accumulate 440,000 units of bacteria.

Introducing new bacteria into your home

Bringing outside dirt and bacteria in your home can be dangerous for your health and the inhabitants of the house.

The above-mentioned research found numerous harmful bacteria among of which E coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bacteria which causes pneumonia and Serratia ficaria, a rare disease causing bacteria with only handful of cases in the last 20 years. And all of these can be found on the soles of your shoes.

Walking around your home with your shoes on may not look like a good idea anymore.

Bringing in different toxins in your home

While dangerous bacteria can be more than enough to make you take off your shoes, it’s not the only thing you bring in your home.

Walking on lawns, dirt or asphalt sticks toxins to your shoes, which you later bring in your home. This is especially bad if you have a baby in your home.

Making your home dirty faster

Yes, toxins and bacteria can be harmful to your health, but wearing outdoor shoes inside your home makes your carpets dirty faster and brings in dust.

This can lead to allergies and health problems as well.

If all the bads that come with wearing your outdoor shoes in your home still can’t change your mind you can hire a professional cleaner to keep your home in good condition. Having professional cleaning regularly performed in your home can minimise the number of harmful bacteria inside your house.
